Kampar, July 19 (J-on) - The first 100 students who would like to park their car at UTAR east gate parking bay may apply for a 6-month parking pass for only RM60 at a counter located there.

The collection of parking fees began today, and as of 1:40pm, 39 discounted passes have been bought. The remaining 6-month passes will be sold at RM80. Alternatively, students can obtain a one year parking pass at RM100.

For the time being students are issued a temporary slip however proper stickers will be issued in the near future.

Drivers who will not park at UTAR east gate frequently may opt to pay on an entry basis which cost RM1. Motorcyclist may park on the land for free.

The subcontractor working the land, William Ho assured that the land will see improvements.

"Granite stones will be laid on the land but this can only be done during the semester break. It will take about 2 weeks to complete," he said.

Ho explained that the system was put in place because the Kampar Fire Department had lodged a complaint with the developer.

"The fire department issued a letter to Taman Kampar Perdana developer and said that the double parking along the way to UTAR east gate will make it impossible for rescue operation if a fire occurs on campus," he said.

The new system is to encourage UTAR drivers to park at the proper parking space and proceeds from the parking fees will be used to fix the land with granite stones.

However, an observation by J-on showed that many drivers are still parking along the roadside as they refuse to pay parking fees.
