Kampar, July 4 (J-on) – More than 500 students were treated to a colourful array of sights and sounds during the Asian Cultural Night 2010 held in UTAR Heritage Hall yesterday.

The event organised by the Asian Cultural Society (ACS) celebrated the spirit of 1Malaysia with a myriad of performances.

Most prominent among them was the energetic cultural instrument performance which showcased a heritage of musical instruments of the three major ethics of Malaysia.

UTAR Vice President, Prof. Dr. Yeoh Suan Pow who officiated the event described the event as "colourful and meaningful".

Organising chairperson Pathma Priya Genesan said that the event was to unite UTARians through their diverse background.

"This event is to bring UTARians under one roof and connect them to various cultures of Malaysia," she said.

Over 20 performances were staged, among them instrumental performances, sketch dances, fashion shows, singing, traditional dances and dramas.

An interesting scene broke out during the ‘urumi mellam’, a traditional Indian drum performance as two groups at the back of the hall from Perak campus and Setapak campus started to challenge one another – in a dance off.

Both groups started shaking and grooving whole heartedly, to the drum beat as bystanders were dragged in to dance along.

ACS chairperson Sharmelan Raj Anbagan hailed the event as a success.

"The feedback from students have been good and inspiring and hopefully students will be more supportive so that we can put up an even better performance," he said.
