Sharpen your brainpower at the 12th MFotM

KAMPAR: We all have known that playing with a Rubik’s cube; a three-dimensional geometry puzzle has mental perquisites. The number of algorithms and techniques needed to solve it just once has to stimulate the brain somehow. However, most of us never realised the vast capacity of mental and emotional benefits tied to the Rubik’s cube. To explore more about Rubik’s cube and its various methods for solving the puzzle faster, come and join us at the 12th Malaysia Festival of the Mind (MFotM).

This year, besides the festival’s regular locations in Perak and Klang Valley, the 12th MFotM will also be held in Penang in order to reach out to more communities in the country. The first station of the 12th MFotM will be held at Dewan Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik in the UTAR Kampar Campus, Perak on 16 and 17 July 2016, followed by the second station at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) Penang Branch Campus on 23 and 24 July 2016. More excitingly, the main affair will take place at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Seri Kembangan, Selangor from 4 to 6 November 2016, which is also held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair.

A concerted effort by the MMLM, UTAR and TAR UC, the crowd-pulling festival in the past has invited scores of seasoned and qualified speakers and trainers introducing and promoting various techniques and skills pertaining to the improvement of mental literacy among Malaysians. These include memory skills, creativity, thinking skills, personality profiling, mind mapping, emotional intelligence, brainpower, mind power and other mental literacy tools.

Aptly themed “Great Mind, Great Future”, the 12th MFotM which is aspired to imprint on the national consciousness of the significance of mental literacy, offers a line-up of enriching talks and workshops ranging from understanding the nature and versatility of the human mind to bringing out the best of the human mind, with the aim of improving our lives.

MMLM Chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik said, “In today’s globalised and competitive world, maximising brainpower is no longer an option. It is a necessity. To excel in life, one needs to adapt oneself and face new challenges intelligently and positively. These new challenges require one to find new and creative ways of problem solving.”

This year, the 12th MFotM brings a new highlight for visitors by inviting world’s best coach for mind sports Gwendolen Noronha to demonstrate and share her mental calculation and brainpower aptitude. The Indian-born Gwendolen is a mental sports coach, franchisor, brand ambassador, philanthropist, entrepreneur, humanitarian, author, and private-pilot who armed with confidence, positive intellectual, a genius brain, and beauty. Gwendolen first showcased as a mental sports coach in the year 2012 at Antalya, Turkey for the Mental Sports Olympics (MEMORIAD). She received the title World’s Best Mind Sports Coach from the World Mental Sports Olympic Federation during the award ceremony of the Mental Calculations World Cup held in Dresden, German in 2014.

Gwendolen is quite simply, a mastermind. The title of the World’s Best Coach bestowed to her on International Women’s Day aptly describes not only the supremacy of her mind but also the ability to pass on the knowledge and create future geniuses. Gwendolen immersed herself into studies and extra-curricular activities giving her a greater perspective in various fields’ right since early school days. With a degree in management and honour’s in phonetics, phonology, anthropology, and graphology her drive and passion was recognised at the onset of her career when she was awarded as ‘Youngest Entrepreneur’ in 2006. She lives in the heart of many youth and is regularly seen at events as a speaker motivating the youth and has been recognised to be one of the most affluent youth icon with a perfect ‘beauty with brains’ – as titled by a German Journalist.

Gwendolen will be speaking on topics which include ‘Brainpower: Your Priceless Commodity’, and ‘The Cubing Workshop’. Gwendolen will be presenting refreshing cubing workshop in which, she and her team will be demonstrating their abilities in solving the Rubik’s cube.

Among the other mind-related talks that will be covered during the festivals in both Perak and Penang are ‘Brilliant Brain Memory Skills’ (Mandarin) by Teo Kim Foo, ‘Numbers Are Gold in The Next 9 Years’ by West Wong, ‘Autonomous Brain Computer Interface Wheelchair’ by Danny Ng Wee Kiat, ‘Mind Map Your Way to Success’ by S. Jeyaraman, ‘Peak Performance Through the Subconscious’ by Ng Thian Watt, ‘Developing Emotional Excellence in Your Life’ by Andrew Au, ‘Rewiring the Brain via the 7 Secret Rhythms’ by T. Elanggovan, ‘Developing Emotional Intelligence for Future Career Success’ (Mandarin) by Choong Hoon Guan, ‘Achieving the Infinite Possibilities’ by Wong Chooi Yee, and ‘Holistic Learning for Personal Effectiveness’ by SK Tan.

Besides these, a total of fourteen workshops, with each programme going for an hour, will be held over the two days in Perak and Penang respectively. Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the festival. Admission to the festival, talks and workshops is free. Visitors also stand a chance to win attractive prizes from the lucky draw, in which, one unit of iPod touch awaits the Perak and Penang grand prize winners respectively.

The annual festival also endeavours to create a greater awareness among Malaysians of all ages on how to develop thinking, memory and creativity skills through the empowerment of the mind. The two-day festival will feature, among others, an exhibition, mind games, MENSA admission test (at a special price), magic corner, and showcasing of Leonard Personality Inventory (a personality test) and mental literacy related products.

Explore your mental potential at 11th MFotM

KAMPAR: With the vision of each and every Malaysian unleashing their mind’s unlimited potential and developing their brainpower, the Malaysia Festival of the Mind stages another comeback this time at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Kampar Campus from 8 to 9 August 2015.

A concerted effort by the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM), UTAR and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, the crowd-pulling festival in the past has invited scores of seasoned and qualified speakers and trainers introducing and promoting various techniques and skills pertaining to the improvement of mental literacy among Malaysians. These include memory skills, creativity, thinking skills, personality profiling, mind mapping, emotional intelligence, brainpower, mind power and other memory management tools.

Aptly themed “Sharpening Your Mind, Boosting Your Brain”, the 11thMalaysia Festival of the Mind (MFotM) offers a line-up of enriching talks and workshops ranging from understanding the nature and versatility of the human mind to bringing out the best of the human brain, with the aim of improving our lives.

MFotM gains a boost this year by inviting memory expert Melik Duyar to demonstrate his brainpower prowess. The Turkey-born Duyar is an author and mental athlete fondly known as ‘The man who forgot to forget’ and ‘Mr Memory’ by the Turkish media. He is also well-known as one of the pioneer memory athletes.

Duyar will be speaking on topics which include ‘Memory Power and The Major System’, ‘Encoding Information and The Method of Loci’, ‘How to Memorise Numbers’ and ‘How to Memorise A Deck of Playing Cards’.

Among the other mind-related talks that will be covered during the festival are ‘Developing Emotional Excellence for Future Career Success’ (Mandarin) by Choong Hoon Guan, ‘How Mindfulness Benefits Learning and Concentration’ by Lily Kong, ‘3 Reasons Why Knowing Your IQ Can Transform Your Life and Career’ by Nic Sim, ‘The MOSTI Funded Brain-Computer Interface Wheelchair Project’ by Prof Datuk Ir Dr Goh Sing Yau, ‘Dream the Impossible Dream’ by Wong Chooi Yee, ‘Rewiring the Brain via the 7 Secrets Rhythm’ by T. Elanggovan, ‘Leave Your Fingers Out of the Equation’ by West Wong, ‘How to Become an Inventor in 60 Minutes’ by Dr Yew Kam Keong, ‘Mind You Mind, Find Your Mine’ by Khooi Chu Boon, ‘The Strongest Brain Memory Techniques’ (Mandarin) by Teo Kim Foo, ‘Mind Map for Success’ by S. Jeyaraman, and ‘Living the Law of Attraction’ by SK Tan.

Besides these, a total of seven workshops, with each programme going for an hour, will be held over the two days. Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the festival. BF Jajambo Charity Night 2014: A Night of Retro

UTAR Kampar, 8 August : A night of excitement performances organized by the Banking and Finance Society had attracted around 1500 UTAR students at the UTAR Grand Hall for its first ever Jajambo Charity Night.

Goh Siew Huei, the chairperson of the retro-themed event expressed her appreciation towards the VIPs present, and especially towards her committee members in her opening speech for working hard together in preparing for the event. Dr. Teh Chee Seng who was in attendance also gave a speech. “An event is not only for enjoyment but also can get to know each other as well as a great time to see the fruits of their (committee) labour,” said the UTAR vice president.

A collection of old-fashioned items were exhibited at the entrance of the Grand Hall.

The main purpose of the event was to raise funds for the conflict issues in South Sudan. A mock cheque of RM8000 was presented as a charity fund to World Vision Malaysia, which was represented by two officials.

The highlights of the event were the performances by local artists Thomas and Jack, and Alvin Chong. They made the crowd go wild with their singing performances as well as interactions with the audience.

The night was also filled with other enjoyable performances. UTAR Dance Club, WowB and Humble First! All gave spectacular dance performances, performing to retro songs such as Jajambo and Mambo No. 5, as well as current pop songs like All About That Bass and Tae Yang’s Ringa Linga.

Several musical acts were also performed during the event. Ng Pei Gang together with his friend Emmanuel showcased their talents with a beatbox and acoustic guitar performance, while the Virgin Boys gave heart-warming acoustic performances of pop hit songs like Rude by Magic! and Billionaire by Bruno Mars.

Live bands Everyday.com and Double Cheese Burger also made the crowd, who were in retro gear, jump and sing with their exciting performances. The enjoyable event came to a close at 12.30 a.m.

6th Asian Cultural Night: A Colourful Canvas

Kampar, 12 July – More than 600 jubilant students massed at the Heritage Hall entrance in the evening of 12^th July eagerly clutching the tickets of the Asian Cultural Night 2014. They were to be entertained by the flamboyantly exciting performances throughout the grand event organized by Asian Cultural Society (ACS) of UTAR. This occasion was consolidated to celebrate the essence of 1Malaysia.

“The main purpose of Asian Cultural Night is to unite the students of the university from various background and races to create awareness on the importance of understanding our diversity of races in Malaysia in conjunction with the 1Malaysia concept as well as bringing out their talents,” stated Mr. Satheesh the chairman of the event and also the society while giving speech in the event.

The guest of honour of the event was Mr. Mahaganapathy Dass, President of 1Malaysia Indian Student Movement (1MISM), Dato’ Vicknesh Veera, Director of 1Malaysia Education Event Management Sdn. Bhd, and local business man, Mr Raja who is running a scrap metal business in Kampar.

Approximately, 20 performances were staged, amongst them instrumental performances, sketch dances, mimicry, singing, traditional dances and dramas. The most awaited part of the event was open dance floor with ‘urumi mellam’, a traditional Indian drum performance. The audience energetically took part in this session. “This is the first time I’m participating in such dance floor and it is totally different of them all,” said Manikandan Nair, a Banking and Finance student, one of the participants.

Rufina Merry Ambrose, the formal Emcee of the splendid event said that the event wasa major success. “Feedbacks from students have been good and inspiring, I hope students will be more supportive in the upcoming events of Asian Cultural Society," she said.

UTAR FICT Industrial Exposure Day

To most, yesterday was only another ordinary day where we woke up, got ourselves scrubbed, proceeded with usual daily Wednesday routine. ‘Less you are a student from Faculty of Information Communication and Technology (FICT) Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), yesterday (2/7/2014) would be a very special day for you because UTAR FICT held its 7^th Industrial Exposure Day at Block N, starting 9.30am in the morning.

“It is indeed a special day for me and for the rest of the FICT students as no class shall be conducted on this day. FICT students who are in their year 2 or year 3 bachelor degree studies shall get the opportunity to be interviewed by the companies from the market for an internship or job post,” said Jia Jun, a year one Business Information System (IB) student.

“Although for the year 1 students like me are unlikely to seek for job opportunities, we get to learn about all these companies’ profiles instead, which will come in handy in future.” He continued.

A quick count reveals that there were at least 20 companies at the Block N corridor, each looking for their prospective employees or interns. Some of the companies that attended to FICT Industrial Exposure Day were: Fushionex, Opensys, MSC, LF Logistics, Enovade, One-Strategy Solution, LifeTech, Murata, ManagePay, Sherwin-William, Lintramax, Canaplus, Flyn, Silverlake, Datamicron, ComputerXpress, Accenture, Brunsfield, Pannage, ComputerXpress, Lifetech, Alcatel-Lucent, Atos Worldline and so on. Even the mogul companies like Huawei, Hilti, Hitachi-eBworx were there to seek for IT expertise among the FICT students.

“Because we care”

FICT Industrial Exposure Day was not as successful as it is today if judged from the companies that were being invited to present.

“Initially, there were only 13 companies being successfully invited, and then it went up gradually. Last year we managed to get 19 companies and this year we get 30 companies instead. What’s more? – they come to Kampar on voluntary basis,” said Dr. Choo, the organizing chairperson who is also the UTAR FICT’s deputy dean that manages the students’ development and industrial training affairs.

“Because we care for the students you see, which is why this Day was being held at the first place,” he continued.

“It is a win-win situation to both the companies and the students, the companies get to choose their future employees from the large pool of students; while students themselves could acquire the knowledge and experience or even get hired prior hand before venture into the market which is highly competitive.” He ended.

“It secures my future”

Wen Bin, a student from FICT Communications and Networking (CN) who has completed his studies last semester now waits for the UTAR convocation in August. Currently, he has been employed by Hilti as an IT System Engineer.

“I get to know Hilti last year (6^th Industrial Exposure Day), although I did not apply for a job position immediately, the prior knowledge about the company by even knowing their existence in the market, has helped me to secure a job, hence secured my future I would say.” Said Wen Bin.

Michael Cheng, also a student from CN was there on the Industrial Exposure Day as well. He applied for an internship position in Murata. “Murata is one of the IT backbones of PDRM Malaysia, I hope that the odds are in my favour.” He said in an optimistic tone.

Similarly, Ronny Wong and Richard Wong, a student from CN and Computer Science (CS) respectively, had applied for a position in Alcatel-Lucent, Hitachi, Carsem, and Pentax.

“Passion must come first, all else second”

We understand that the CGPA of a student is one of the important prospects that shape the student’s future in the market. The good news is, it is not the most powerful indicator.

“It is true that we are seeking for fast-learner and student with exuberance of confidence. At the same time we are also looking for the other positive traits in a student for example traits like integrity, courage, teamwork, commitment and so on. Above all, passion must come first, all else second.” Said Dr. Nithia, the Hilti’s developer who was there yesterday on Industrial Exposure Day.

Amanda Eng, the account manager of Hitachi-eBworx said something similar as well. “Companies nowadays acknowledge the Generation Y as a very unique generation. Not only we monitor them differently, they themselves also actively monitor the company. Therefore, we must constantly provide adequate guidance and training for them to flourish. Nevertheless, it is the effort invested by the generation Y that will help them to flourish ultimately.

The FICT students’ attendance to Industrial Exposure Day is compulsory. However it is not as burdening and stressful as the word “compulsory” may mean. The students that attended are rewarded as well, by the companies. For instance, Hitachi-eBworx awarded every student with free movie ticket if they submitted their CV; the same goes to OpenSys who awarded each of the student a powerbank after the company interviewed them. The most luxurious reward was from Fushionex who awarded two students with iPad mini, one from lucky draw and another one for answering a quiz correctly.

Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement: Empowering Individuals

The Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) was initiated by YABhg Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik in the year 2006. Its aim is to introduce and promote various techniques and skills pertaining to the improvement of mental literacy among Malaysians. MMLM’s activities are inclusive of seminars, dialogues, workshops, mental literacy talks for schools, mind competitions, and Malaysia Festival of the Mind (MFoTM).

The MFoTM has been ongoing since year 2007, a valuable effort under the umbrella of MMLM, jointly with Universtiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC). The 10^th MFoTM in year 2014 was held on the 21st to the 22nd of June at Grand Hall UTAR, Perak Campus.

Among the renowned speakers of the MFoTM public talks were Prof Dato’ Dr Goh Sing Yau, KC Chia, Wong Chooi Yee, Sussanne Lee, S. Jeyaraman, West Wong, Dr Yew Kam Keong, Cheong Kok Wai, Hong Khay Chai, Lily Kong and Choong Hoon Guan.

The annual MFoTM aims to imprint the importance of mental literacy among the general public and to create awareness about the human mind and ways of tapping into and developing one’s brain power. It also aims to introduce and to promote various techniques and skills pertaining to the improvement of mental literacy, such as memory skills, thinking skills, creativity, and personality profiling.

There were 21 exhibitors, 14 public talks and 7 workshops, with each programme lasting one hour that were held over the two days of the festival.

This annual festival successfully attracted favourable responses from all segments of society, from young school-going children to working adults and retirees since its launch in 2007. Last year’s festival attracted about 2,600 visitors in Kampar.

Just a corner away (refer to the second picture), one can locate the Powerhouse Academy exhibition booth. The Powerhouse Academy was founded by West Wong, one of the renowned speaker mentioned earlier. West Wong, 27, was a UTAR acturial science graduand. He too, was the bronze medal winner in the category ‘Mental Arithmetic Flash Anzan’ at the World Mental Olympics 2012. His unexceptionally good arithmetic skill earned him the title of ‘human calculator’, whereby he demonstrated it as well to the public. He was shown a series of numbers with variants in digits (2 to 3 digits), spawning speed (one second or lesser), and the accumulation counts (5 to 10 accumulation counts). Nevertheless, he managed to answer them all.

He is a learner from the Powerhouse Academy.

Other than the core exhibitions, talks, and workshops; there was a lucky draw section going on as well, which awaited visitors with attractive prizes and the grand prize of a Samsung Galaxy S5. A science exhibition was held simultaneously at specific periods to entertain the public. “Witnessing efforts pouring in from multiple sides to Malaysia Festival of the Mind, it is expected that the aim of the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement shall soar and hail.” says YABhg Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik.
