Kampar, 10 June (J-on) -- Three photostat shops in New Town were raided by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) enforcement division here yesterday for allegedly printing textbooks illegally.

One of the shop owners who wished to be unnamed said seven officers and a lawyer reached his shop at 3pm, claiming that he had violated the Copyright Act 1987.

“They came in and requested a list of photocopied books in my shop before they started confiscating the copies,” he told J-on.

Besides a round number of 100 books were seized, MDTCC officers also confiscated two photostat machines from the shop for further investigation late yesterday night.

He said the two confiscated photostat machines cost him a total loss of RM36,000 and he had to pay back all the deposit to his customers.

“Lepas ini semua beli original,” he said, added that he would not be involved with photocopying textbooks for students anymore from now onwards.

When asked who made the complaint to MDTCC, the shop owner said that business rivals were suspected.

“There are so many photostat shops in this area doing similar business, but why only three shops raided this time?” he said.

However, MDTCC enforcement officers refused to comment on this issue.
