If you’ve been in Kampar for as long as I have – which is two and a half years – you’d notice that the once non-existent night life here has slowly become somewhat acceptable.

The nightlife in Kampar used to be limited to just ‘mamak-ing’ and going to the cyber cafes to play games. But now, a new sort of night activity has been slowly gaining popularity here in Kampar.

Before 2007, when the UTAR campus in Kampar was just opened, there was only one snooker centre, located just behind 21st bistro. However, it has recently closed down.

Now, there are three additional snooker and pool centres, namely The Cue, Winnie & The Pool, and MaxBreak. The most curious case is that these pool centres were all established approximately the same time. But with so many pool centres appearing, wouldn’t the competition be extra high?

Luckily our business-minded friends also have a few tricks up their sleeves. Winnie & The Pool is the newer one of the lot – it’s located on the same row as Khakabo cyber café. To attract customers, they’ve put out a big banner advertising a small competition. Winners can get one set of pool cue worth RM180, with over five styles to choose from. They’ve also collaborated with Fecca (a cyber café) to help put up the same banner.

For those interested, the price of pool at Winnie & The Pool is RM12 per hour. However, students who present their student ID upon payment get a 10% discount.

Next stop would be The Cue. You can find The Cue at the same row as The Golden Sand café – located at the shop lots nearby TAR College. As observed, The Cue mainly serves a mature clientele.

Come nightfall, The Cue would be brimming with elder men playing snooker, and young men playing both pool and snooker. As the place isn’t smoke-free, those who are averse towards smoking would not be recommended to go there. But if you do, then you’ll just fit right in.

Pool rates at The Cue are RM10.80 per hour. There are no student discounts here.

Finally, we have our most popular pool and snooker joint - MaxBreak. It is located nearby Haji Ghany and is opposite the factories. MaxBreak started out with just three shop lots, but ever since business has been blooming, it’s now spanned over five shop lots, and with added pool and snooker tables. Business is so good that during its peak hours at night, one needs to reserve a table in advance.

However, MaxBreak doesn’t just rely on luck to run its business. There are quite a few lucrative promotions that attract not only the usual male customers, but also female customers. For example, every Wednesday is ‘ladies day’. Female customers who play get an additional 30% off of the usual rate. Pool rates are at RM10.80 per hour.

Like Winnie & The Pool, they also offer a 10% discount on students who show their student ID. More reason to carry around that ID.

Most importantly, for people who dislike the smoky areas of the common snooker centres, MaxBreak is absolutely smoke-free.

MaxBreak – the most popular pool outlet in new town.

So now that you know your pool centres well enough, it’s time to expand your night activities. Take your pick from the three pool centres and harness your pool playing prowess.
