Ignorance to Our Rights
Kampar, June 19 (J-on) – The students’ turnout for the Student Representative Committee (SRC) election was at an all-time low.
The first SRC election in 2008 had a 30 percent student turnout, which was a total of 1335 voters out of 4,500 students in campus at the time.
The turnout during the second SRC election in 2009 had only 976 voters out of 8,700 registered students, which was an 11 percent turnout rate.
There was a double-up of student increase from 2008 to 2009, but the voting rate was lower with a 19 percent decrease.
UTAR Social Science lecturer Por Heong Hong commented that the main cause for this phenomenon is the depolitisation of students on campus.
“Many students think that SRC is just a middleman between students and university management. Hence, there is no significant reason for them to vote for SRC,” she told J-on when contacted.
Por added that there may also be a lack of confidence among the students towards SRC.
“They think that no matter how many changes the SRC tries to make, restrictions given by management level will remain the main obstacle,” she observed.
