State funeral for Tun Lim

, Nov 27 (J-on): Former Penang Chief Minister, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu’s demise was given a state funeral here in recognition to his huge contribution to the state. His body is now lies in Dewan Sri Pinang in Lebuh Light until Sunday for the public to pay their final respects.

People from all walks of life including community leaders, business leaders, NGO representatives, Consul-Generals, political leaders and Cabinet members pay their respects since early in the morning.On Friday, at least 30 cars containing state, federal officials and friends accompanied the cortege from his residence to Dewan Sri Pinang with the police heading the procession.

His coffin was covered by Jalur Gemilang and carried by the army into the car.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government has decided to rename Jelutong Expressway as Tun Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

"The 17.84km stretch of highway is from Weld Quay to Batu Maung covering both the Jelutong Expressway (JE) and Bayan Lepas Coastal Highway," he told reporters in a press conference here yesterday.

He also said that Penang has loss a great leader. He urged the Penang flag to be flown half-mast until the funeral in respect to Dr Lim.

He also cancelled all his public and political events over the weekends as a sign of mourning and respect.

Dr Lim, 91, who was the second Penang Chief Minister for 21 years and co-founder of Gerakan passed away peacefully on Wednesday 9.07pm in his residence after being warded for a month in Penang Hospital for stroke.

He leaves behind wife Toh Puan Goh Sing Yeng, sons Chien Aun and Chien Cheng, daughters Pao Yen and Pao Lin, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His cortege will leave for Batu Gantung crematorium at noon tomorrow.
