LETTER TO THE EDITOR
By Lim Gee Hern, Bachelor of Communication (Journalism)
The latest decision to ban UTAR cyclists from using the KTAR road is outright ridiculous and should be pulled back at all cost.
KTAR management has the right to refuse UTAR students from cycling in their compound, but it does not mean that they should do that.
They must know that many UTARians are depending on the shortcut provided at KTAR; to lose them means that UTAR cyclists, particularly for those living in New Town area will face inconvenience when getting to school. And that is only one of the many problems that may occur.
Instead of taking the shortcut by pushing the red button, KTAR should instead work together with UTAR to find an acceptable solution for both sides.
To make the matter worse, from the explanations we heard from UTAR and KTAR managements, it seems that UTAR is letting KTAR to do as they like, because the place involved is under KTAR'S purview. UTAR does not propose any solution, nor promised to propose it sometime in the future.
And KTAR told us that the ban is not permanent, as long as UTAR can do something about the UTAR cyclists who constantly break the rules inside KTAR's compound by not following the dress code and always cycling in group, which is dangerous for the road user.
One more thing, we have been told that KTAR had raised this issue since 2009, and we are sure that most of the student didn’t know a thing about this.
The funny thing is, reasons provided by KTAR are not that serious, and can be solved easily, as long as somebody is willing to think about it and of course, solve it.
Instead of banning all UTAR cyclist from entering KTAR, how about constructing a system to regulate UTAR cyclists? KTAR is the owner of the road. Therefore, they can grant privileges to the UTAR cyclists to use KTAR's compound.
This can be achieved by implementing a pass system. UTAR cyclists who wish to use the road should be made to apply for a pass. And the pass will be required every time a cyclist wishes to use the KTAR's road.
Privileges are not rights. The pass can be pulled back if the cyclist breaks any rules. KTAR can make appropriate rules and have them written clearly behind the pass so the ‘law breaker’ will not have any excuses.
Regarding the dangerous cycling issue, it can be solved by putting appropriate signs on the roadside. The awareness campaign as suggested by the KTAR's management only works in short term. We need to see further by putting signboards on the roadside. Specify the road that should be taken by the UTAR cyclist and the other rules.
The cyclists will see it every day; it means that they are exposed to it every day. It will be beneficial to both KTAR and UTAR student.
For those illegal parking issue inside the KTAR compound, the logical solution is to deny all those motorcars that does not have KTAR sticker from driving beyond the KTAR gate. They have the convenient transport, the cyclists doesn’t.
UTAR and KTAR need to seriously think about sitting on the same table and discussing this issue seriously, and not by pushing the responsibility to each other. If they really want to solve this problem, they can if they actually try to think.
Denying the responsibilities means that you are victimising the students.
