As a new student going to a university, life can be daunting especially when the place screams of unfamiliarity. The following questions that would pop up could possibly be: Where do I stay? Where do I eat? What do I do when I get bored?
Well fret no more - this article will answer your questions on where to eat - which is essential to every standard of living to feed your hunger! In this guide, you would see two possible places to choose from. So sit back, relax, and read on!
I have been living in Kampar for the past two years, being a student too. Hence, I have tried a variety of food around Kampar’s New Town. The first place I would recommend is a place called Seng Yip, which means ‘honest business’ in the Cantonese dialect. It’s also known for their tagline, ‘The Good Food People (TGFP)’. The food provided there is satisfactory in its food quality, affordable in its pricing and is healthy as they provide good, wholesome meals.
Originally, the restaurant was established in early January 2006 – a year and a half before University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) was established. You could say they cater mainly to the student’s need for food. Then, as business flourished in April 2008, the restaurant expanded to three shop lots to have more space for the growing needs of the students and family who came to dine.
Owned by Angie Ng Ai Chin, 46, it is situated at 2285, Jalan Hala Timah 1, Taman Bandar Baru, 31900 Kampar, Perak. You can find it within the vicinity of Kedai Buku HQ, and it’s situated in the same row as TG Convenient Store, spanning three shop lots.
Famous for its Chicken Rice (Kai Fan) and Economical Mixed Rice (Chap Fan), many people will flock to the place for their daily meals.
“There really are a variety of dishes to choose from for the mix rice,” said Tan, 21, an Accounting student who only wanted to be identified by his surname.
“The food over here is one of the cheapest compared to the food in other restaurants.
“Also, the food service here is fast and efficient when it comes to ordering, and the food delivery is so far, so good,” Tan further added.
The Chicken Rice is one of the hottest foods at TGFP - the meat is simply amazing and there is that undefined satisfaction as you take that bite, and as your teeth sinks into the meat, you can feel the juice of the meat flowing into your taste buds combined with the dark sauce that gives that extra kick in its taste.
The choices of dishes to choose from, as testified by Tan, are simply amazing. Just by looking at the long display of food, your mouth might start to water and your stomach do back flips as it dances in delight to the glorious food.
Among the mixed rice dishes available are green vegetables, bitter gourd fried with eggs, tofu, minced meat, pork and chicken fillets, fried eggs sunny side up - just to name a few.
Some of the varieties also come with curry, for those who like to have some spice in their life. Sometimes, the chopped chicken is braised with herbs. In addition to that, there are those with natural sweetness such as fried pumpkin and even tomatoes.
Vegetarians would not have any problems choosing the food there as there are many vegetable dishes to choose from.
In addition, there is also complimentary soup which is occasionally filled with either seaweed, diced carrots, diced winter melons, chicken neck and feet which gives the soup a healthy essence. Some may know that chicken soup is one of the great ways to prevent a cold!
If you feel that the mixed rice dishes are rather insufficient, there are over 50 choices of other foods to choose from too, like noodles, beef and rice sets, chicken and rice sets, and egg and rice sets.
The place has a rather cooling environment at night and also has a mini fountain which is situated in front of the restaurant, at the centre of all the outdoor seats.
However, the place can get rather packed during peak period which is around 7.30pm to 8.30pm. So if you want to have a chat without the fear of being overheard, this would be one of the places to be.
The best drink available is hoi dai yeh (sea coconut), which consist of sea coconut, dried lychee, herbs and ginseng roots. The drink is refreshing and it seems to awaken every iota of the body when consumed. Perfect for drinking slowly and gazing towards the lush greenery of the Kampar mountain, or having a chat with your friends while enjoying your heavenly sea coconut.
There are also other drinks to choose from, such a Coco-Cola, Fruit Juices, Coffee, Milo, Herbal drinks, cincau, barley, soya bean and others.
TGFP opens everyday from 9.30am to 9.30pm with enough seating for approximately 130 people.
