East Gate Area in Chaos

Kampar, Apr 4 (J-on)- Many Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) students tend to park their cars at the area known as East Gate, either at the available private compound or along the roads, resulting in traffic disorder.

This started to happen when UTAR prohibited students without parking stickers from parking their cars within the university compound.

Some students complained that some drivers parked their cars at the entrance of the empty compound blocking it. Thus, they rather park their cars along the roads.

However large vehicles like buses and lorries cannot enter the university through east gate if there are cars parked along the roads.

According to east gate guard Ravikhan, the university authority has given notice, instructing students to park their cars at the empty compound as cars along the road are causing traffic jams. The authority would also be not responsible for any damages to the vehicles.

Ravikhan: Vehicles parked along the road will bring inconvenience to us in sending students for emergency treatment if accidents happen.

He added that the university authority encouraged students to take buses provided by UTAR to overcome the traffic and parking problems.

However, according to some students, the buses are usually overloaded and they have to wait for the next bus.

Chinese studies student Loh Hui Qian said that she drives a car daily between Ipoh and Kampar. There were many occasions where she parked her car at an available space but could not get out because other vehicles have blocked her car.

Loh: I park my car along the road to avoid from being blocked by other vehicles.

She added that the authority did not provide any arrangement that enable students to inform other drivers to move away their cars. This has caused much inconvenience to students.

“It is good news that there are more and more students studying at UTAR, but they (the university authority) should foresee and resolve the possible problems before recruiting more students,” she said.

Students complained that there are still quite a number of empty parking lots despite the parking sticker balloting being over.

With regard to this, the university authority explained that those empty lots were reserved for UTAR guests and visitors.

Students who failed to apply for parking stickers would park their cars at any available space at East Gate.
