Dinesh Pillay A/L K. Thayalan Pillay, the current chairman of the Student Representative Committee (SRC) UTAR who will end his tenure at the end of 2012 is ready to pass the baton to his upcoming potential sucessor in the next election.
Previously, SRC had taken part actively in several significant activities to prove they are still on the go. One of the grandest event organized by the SRC early this year was the Star Dream cruise which was dubbed the event of year by far. It's main objective was to raise funds for the Student Welfare Fund (SWF). SWF is a trust fund established in 2005 which acts as a helping hand to any needy students that wish to seek financial aid.
"All the money we manage to raise has been channeled to SWF. We have not misuse a single cent from the profit gained" he fully added.
One of Dinesh Pillay's proudest moment as the SRC chairman, was when he and his team were the first to bring a meeting with international students. He wish to bring an international student representative on board, this is to ensure these international students have a platform to voice out the opinion or dissatisfaction.
Besides that, the SRC team also held a meeting with all the chairpersons from every club and society to hear their say so as to inform the new rules and regulations implemented. This meeting proved to be a successful one, as it brought together societies collaborating with one another to organized an event.
However, as Dinseh said, " SRC is not always a bed full of roses. We do have our share of pitfall and complaints from from the student. We must stress that none of your complaints will go unheard as we are consistently working on catering to the needs and rights of UTAR students".
They had received complaints from students regarding the insufficient plug-points in Block C and K as it had caused inconvenience for students wishing to set up membership drive booth. Thus SRC had sent in a proposal to the Department of Student Affairs (DSA) which saw 16 additional plug-points fixed.
Also, SRC had a meeting with the Department of Safety and Security (DSS) to express their concern on the students safety who have to attend late night classes. with much consideration and tolerance, DSS have decided to place more security guards on the respective blocks to keep a watchful eye.
SRC had even proposed to eliminate night classes in near future to the DEANs of each faculty's. The administration of UTAR have promised that once the building of FAS and FICT blocks are ready, night classes will be eliminate.
Not only working on issues happening in UTAR, SRC has spread it's wings to outside its comfort zone as well. When the house-burning cases occured rampantly in Eastlake last semester, SRC stepped up and highlighted the case to Professor Dr Teh Chee Seng, Vice President of UTAR and Kampar Police Station. This act was applauded by many as it raised awareness to curb the problem.
"Whatever we do, our primary objective is to help the students. They are our priority" he said.
Lastly, he hoped students will not lose their trust placed in SRC.
"SRC is the voice of UTAR" he ended.
"All the money we manage to raise has been channeled to SWF. We have not misuse a single cent from the profit gained" he fully added.
