It was a day of joy for the students from the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) as their debate team managed to edge out the team from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) to win the 2nd Inter-faculty English Language Debate Competition.

The competition spanned 5 days from 2nd to 6th July 2012 in UTAR Kampar and was organized by the English Language Society.

The title of debate for the day was “This house would abolish the death penalty for drug trafficking” and the contestants were given the title 1 day before and of their stand a mere half an hour before the finals commence.

Both teams managed to make their voices heard by the judges and even though at one point they seemed to spend too much time arguing about the statistics of crime rates in the country, they were able to deliver their points and reinforce their respective stands.

However, it seemed that the team from FEGT was the better team for the day and the audience cheered wildly for them when they were declared the winner.

“It was an unexpected win for us, but this has been a very good experience and I will be participating again next year,” said Sivanes Murugaiah, one of the debaters from FEGT and also the best speaker for the day.

The head of the organizing committee, Natalie Chan Foon Zing felt that the event has managed to garner the co-operation and support from the students, and as for whether the competition will be held on a larger scale next year because of its success, she said “We will leave that decision to the committee for the next year.”
