The attention of UTAR football fans shifted from the shores of Europe to the UTAR Sports Complex, as the 2012 UTAR Sports Carnival kicked off with a bang yesterday.

Kicking off: Players from UIFC B(left) and Infinite FC tussle for the ball in their match at the UTAR Sports Complex yesterday. Infinite FC won 2-1.

Lifting this year’s football title was UTAR Indians Football Club A (UIFC A), who won the tournament in dominating fashion, winning all their games and conceding only a single goal in the process.

The champions, led by captain Jashan Gunaselan, vanquished Infinite FC in the final, while UIFC B and Kah Wai FC finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

Skipper Gunaselan attributed his team’s triumph to their solidarity and teamwork, despite the fact that the team did not have a great deal of time to gel together.

Triumphant: Victorious team captain Jashan Gunaselan

“It’s all about teamwork and commitment .We only had one week to prepare-so we did have to cram things a little. “

“But since this is our maiden victory, we are extremely happy, and we hope to maintain this when we take part in the upcoming Clash of the UTARians tournament.”

The football championship marked the opening of the 2012 UTAR Sports Carnival, where 5 major sports championships are put up for grabs- including badminton, futsal, basketball, and volleyball.

Held over two days, the carnival is organized by the UTAR Sports Club.

Sports Club chairman Sailesh Kumar said that the event was a definite success, despite the relatively low audience turnout.

“The response from the participants is actually quite good and thus, we can say it’s a success.

The fact that the event is being held in the morning may explain why the audience turnout is relatively low.” he said.

“We expect a much larger crowd for the basketball and badminton championships, which will both be held at night.”

He added that this tournament did not mark the end of the Sports Club’s ambitions for the future of UTAR football.

“This is just the stepping stone for the sport of football in UTAR. In the future we hope to organize leagues, possibly every semester and also hiring coaches to work with our players.”

“However, we need more participation-not only from the players but also from committee members. More manpower will allow us to do more for the sports in UTAR, so we need students to step up.”

The full results of the tournament are as follows:
