The operators from all 4 stalls were seen scrambling to serve food to students and staff who decided to have lunch at the new cafeteria.
By 1 p.m. the dishes were almost sold out and the students had to wait for the food to be ready.
“Business was good today but since it is the first day, service was a bit slow,” said the noodle stall operator Kok Siew Fong.
A seasoned business man himself, Kok expected the situation to be chaotic. There was also a communication breakdown between him and the kitchen staff.
Another food operator, Sam Foong Pheng was overwhelmed by the great response to the new cafeteria.
“We were not well prepared for the big crowd. At the moment we cannot estimate the number of people as that will need time,” said chicken rice stall operator Sam Foong Pheng.
Sam also mentioned that she hopes to receive students’ feedback so that she'll be able to improve her stall's services.
“If the students do not provide me with feedback then I will ask them. That way we can slowly improve,” she explained.
On the other hand, vegetarian stall operator Fan Phooi Lin had to close her vegetarian restaurant located at Kampar New Town temporarily to cater to the demand at the new cafeteria.
“There was not enough rice and we had to bring rice from the shop. That was why we had to close the restaurant for a while,” said Fan.
One of Fan’s employees was even amused by the fact that they had to temporarily close the restaurant to bring rice to the campus.
While the other cafeteria operators operates their own food business outside UTAR, western stall operator Chang Voon Sing does not.

Fan said everything is still in disarray at her stall.

“I used to work as an employee in a school cafeteria but I resigned from the job to operate this business,” said Chang, the western stall operator.
Chang explained that on the first day everything is expected to be chaotic, but in weeks to come, the service will definitely improves.
