“The talk was quite interesting and the slides improved my understanding,” said Chinese Studies student Lee Yin Le.

Lee has studied contemporary Chinese history in his syllabus and was exposed to the history of Sun but said that his textbook did not have many photos to show.

Sun had a base in Penang located at 120 Armenian Street. This shophousehas great historical significance, as it was the place where the Canton Uprising in China was planned.

“Sun found his staunchest supporters in Penang and Malaya. He was not welcomed in Singapore because the Chinese there had supported him through two revolutions but both failed,” said speaker Khoo Salma Nasution.

Khoo added that Sun founded the revolutionary paper, KwangWahYitPoh, also the oldest Chinese Paper outside China.
