Kampar, June 8 (J-On) – Students passing through Block C throughout this week will be greeted by an array of booths promoting a myriad of clubs and societies as part of UTAR’s Recruitment Drive 2011.

The event which is ending on June 10, allows students to sign up for membership at a co-curricular club or society of their choice.

Organising committees involved used this time to attract new members by putting up large posters, displaying musical instruments and selling freshly baked apple pies among others.

Some of the booths are beautifully designed in an attempt to draw the crowd’s attention.

One such booth belonged to the Arts & Craft Society which has a Styrofoam cut-out resembling a black chandelier hanging above its counter.

The "chandelier" that greets visitors at the Arts and Craft Society booth took two days to complete.

Aesthetics aside, the club’s senior member Tan Chin Yin said that a lucky draw is also conducted to attract new members.

Tan hopes to achieve a 20% increase in her society's membership numbers through the recruitment drive.

The English Language Society (ELS) on the other hand, decided to use familiarity to appeal to the masses.

“ELS is a club that is present in secondary schools. Thus, we believe that new students freshly out from school will be interested to join,” said the club’s organising committee member Lim Puey Ru.

Lim mentioned that members would be included in the club's mailing list and be informed on upcoming events.

Sophomore year Biochemistry student Grace Chia took the opportunity to sign up for the Photography Club at the drive.

When asked why she decided to join the club, Chia who is also an active member of UTAR’s Christian Fellowship cheekily replied “I want to be a better photographer.”

“Besides, it’s good to gain new experiences and what better way to do so than to join a new club!”
