UTAR, July 2 (J-On) - A talk on mental health awareness was held at DDK5 in conjunction with the Health Awareness Campaign organised by UTAR First Aid Society on June 30.
The two-hour session featured two talks, “Destigmatising Mental Illness” and “Total Emotional Well Being” by Datin Dr Ang Kim Teng and Dr Looi Poh Suan respectively.
“The talk was interesting. I learnt about emotional and mental health,” said Psychology student Ang Chi Ching.
The audience was exposed to the types of mental illnesses and told that there is no shame in having mental illness.
“It is okay to have mental illness. Be open!” stressed Ang.
Another Psychology student, Teh Chen Peng described the talk as entertaining and educational.
“The talk was funny, amusing, informative and well presented.
“I learnt many life skills such as how to cope with stress, anxiety and mental illness,” said Teh.
Teh was referring to Looi who added some day-to-day occurrences in our life which the audience could not agree more.
“The talk gave the audience an opportunity to change their thoughts such as what mental health or mental illness is.
“It also gave us ideas on how to reduce stress through positive thinking,” explained Psychology student Suganesh.
At the end of the two-hour session, the audience was given a complimentary copy of Shape magazine and a Riotous Hostel voucher.
