Kampar, Mar 20 (J-On) – It was a tensed and action packed situation as police pursued two fleeing suspects on foot. Little did our men in blue expect that the suspects would attack them. A commotion ensued.

That was actually just a demonstration in conjunction with the Walkabout Programme by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong. He was here today to officiate a community base for the Voluntary Patrol Scheme or Skim Rondaan Sukarela (SRS) at Taman Bandar Baru field.

Amusing as the demonstration may have been, the concern over security is very real among UTARians and Kamparians alike.

SRS is a voluntary programme set up by the Rukun Tetangga (RT) under the purview of National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN). The members of this scheme are the residents from the neighbourhood. SRS is aimed to increase the safety of the community as well as to foster spirit of unity. SRS is similar with the Neighbourhood Watch in the United Kingdom.

In his speech, Lee said that SRS is a good initiative for residents to be a partner of the police.

“I am very happy that this scheme received an overwhelmed response from the residents. SRS is proven to contribute in the reduction of crimes rates and this initiative has helped the police force in curbing crimes effectively,” he said.

A local resident who only wanted to be known as Wan said he was optimistic with the scheme.

“SRS is useful for the Bandar Baru Kampar residents as it will help to reduce crime rates. People will somehow not feel scared anymore for their safety,” said Wan.

Lee then had a walkabout at Bandar Baru Kampar with the SRS members. There were also exhibition by the police force and civil defence department.

SRS members will be provided with authorisation card as recognition and are covered by insurance. They have the authority to arrest suspected criminals and hand them to the police. Members are equipped with vest, batons, whistle and torchlights. Besides, SRS members will be registered automatically as Rakan Cop.
