KAMPAR: UTAR's 4th Earth
Hour was organized by its Community Service Society at UTAR Sports Complex last
Saturday, and approximately more than 500 people made up the crowd despite the
heavy rains that evening.
It was a big risk taken by
the committee as the annual event is usually held in Student Pavilion I of the
campus. As a result, the schedule of the event had to be delayed but
nevertheless, the program ran smoothly with minor glitches. The Chairperson of
the event, Reagen Lee, apologized for the inconvenience caused unto the
participants because of the rain.

Dr. Teh Chee Seng, Vice
President of Student Development and Alumni Relations of UTAR, who was in
attendance, congratulated the committee for their hard work and effort in
preparing for the event in his speech. He also stressed the importance of conserving
the Earth's resources.
"I just signed a check
for the campus electricity bill for February amounting to more than RM400,000,
and that is after discount," he said. "However, saving money is not
the primary concern, but saving our natural resources." He also gave tips
on how to save electricity such as turning off the air-conditioning in the
classrooms instead of opening the windows if it gets too cold indoors.
The UTAR Earth Hour event
this year broke tradition by using glow sticks in green and blue colours
instead of using candles. At half-past 8pm, the crowd counted down and broke
their glow sticks and the lights in the complex were turned off, giving the
place a concert feel.

Throughout the night, the
crowd enjoyed spectacular performances by Just 7, a new dance group, and Joanne
Lai, who sang Let It Go and With Your Love. Marson Yeo and Samuel Ng, both widely-known
magicians, amazed the crowd with their magical act.
Other performances were a
sweet acoustic gig by the Virgin Boys, an energetic dance performance by the
Dance Club, and a 24 Festive Drums performance by the Wushu Club.
Besides the main event,
other events that took place were the lucky draw which consisted of prizes such
as tickets to The Lost World of Tambun and a foldable bike, and an exclusive DJ
performance by AA-ron Silva Raj, a resident DJ at Ipoh's Sensation Of Sound to
wind down the night.

Adrian Lee, the program department head
of the event said, "It was a success even though it rained." Indeed,
the event proved how spirited UTAR students can be even when faced with bad
weather.
