KAMPAR, 19 March 2014: Inheriting the legacy of volunteerism, Public Relations (PR) undergraduates from University Tunku Abdul Rahman are campaigning to reduce unwanted strays through a community service campaign with the theme of Animal Welfare.
The Animal Welfare Group is one of the four groups under the subject of Public Relations Campaign. Identified by the hash tag #PAW2014 on Facebook, the group has adapted the word ‘P’ from PR Campaign and ‘AW’ from Animal Welfare. Focusing on reducing strays, the group supports animal adoptions.
Bearing the name of PAW Kingdom Carnival, the students has worked with the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) for this event, to urge more people to volunteer selflessly in adopting strays as pets. To further strengthen the core message of the campaign, One FM plays the role of the campaign’s media partner to reach out to greater audiences

A variety of interactive activities were held, including a purebred dog show featuring 20 different breeds of canines from Malaysian Kennel Association (MKA) following an exclusive sharing session with Natalie Ng, the campaign ambassador from 8TV.
“Education and creating awareness on animal welfare issues is the way forward. By creating awareness about the suffering of the innocent animals, we hope to cultivate compassionate action among our society members ’’ said Dr Mah.
Vice president of ISPCA, Mr Ricky Soong remarked that Malaysians are well meaning in general but usually regarded shelters as accountable for all strays. "We cannot re-home or shelter every stray. If you remove one pack of strays, another moves in, so it's better for the original pack to be adopted by the community," he said.
UTAR president Prof Dato’  Dr Chuah Hean Teik commented that, “this campaign shall be a platform that will enable more of us to translate our words into community action, and harness the power of our youth to be synthesized in a powerful manner to make a real difference to others’ lives especially our four legged friends.”
