Gotong Royong for Students of “Sekolah Kurang Murid”

Kampar- 26 Feb (J-on) – Some 49 UTAR students from different faculties and three staff members from the Department of Soft Skill Competency (DSSC), volunteered for a community service (gotong royong) program which was held in SJK (C) Sin Min, Sungai Siput Selatan yesterday.
SJK (C) Sin Min, Sungai Siput Selatan School is situated 15 kilometers from Kampar. This school is considered as a rural region school which consists of only 26 students and 10 teachers.
The event was organized by the Department of Soft Skill Competency under the program, New Village Community Service. New Village is also known as the Chinese New Village. The Chinese community formed this settlement during the diminishing period of British Rule in Malaysia in the mid-1950s.
According to the head of this event, Ong Chong Aik, 22, the main purpose of this program is to create a sense of social service awareness as well as to educate the students in the benefits of offering their contribution towards the society.
There were a few activities that have been set up by DSSC in the school compound such as gotong royong, drawing classes, computer classes, station games, mathematic quiz, IQ questions and origami. The pupils were enjoying the games and activities from 9am to 2pm.
“Community service is one of the good programs for students to participate in as it is a way to render our services towards the society,” said Ong.
“Besides that, I am able to brush up skills such as leadership skills, interaction skills and communication skills through this program,” he added.
According to one of the participants, Rajina Kishnan, 23, to accomplish our country’s 1 Malaysia concept, everyone should be involved and volunteer in these kind of activities. Through these activities, everyone acquires the opportunity to interact and work together with different communities and races in which in turn, enables us to learn about other cultures.
Tan Seoh Chen, 22, said, “UTAR students should be exposed to more programs similar to this as programs like this not only enriches UTAR students’ ability to bring out the joy in others but gives them the opportunity to know other students who share the same interest.”
“I realized that I felt a lot of satisfaction while cleaning the storeroom of school, although there were times when I said to myself “Enough is enough, you can’t do everything yourself,” I will definitely attend more programs with charitable values in future,” said Tan.
SJK (C) Sin Min Headmistress, Lau Yoke Sam said, “I feel very thankful and pleased with the UTAR students and staff members who were willing to help us to do our gotong royong.”
