Student survives lightning strike

Kampar, October 30 (J-on) – A motorcyclist survived without severe injuries after being struck by lightning in the evening yesterday.

Nagin Raj who was on his bike alone was caught in a torrential rain around 6pm near the wet market in Kampar old town.

He said a sudden lightning bolt flashed before his eyes followed by thunder exploded by his ears.

“It sounded like firecrackers. At that moment, I thought I was going to be blind or deaf. I was very scared,” said the Utar Foundation in Science student.

According to his statement, lightning bolt struck Raj directly, entering at the top of his head and exiting through both his feet but he steadily stopped his motorcycle by the road.

The motorcyclist who was on his way to the Public Bank squatted down immediately and shut his ears, said Raj.

“I felt dizzy and my heartbeats increased. I can even feel sparks on my shoulders,” Raj shared his experience with J-on.

He said passersby went up to him to show concern and he was taken to a nearby for a thorough body check-up.

The doctor provided him with necessary medical treatment despite that no severe wounds or burns on his body but another around of check-up would be required.

“If my body does not feel any discomfort after 24 hours, the doctor assured me that I will be fine,” he said, adding that he suffered a mild hearing loss after the incident.

Raj said he discarded the helmet believed to have drawn the electricity when he found small holes on its surface.

His friend Sharmelan Raj said he could feel his shock but he believed Raj did not suffer heavy injuries.

Lightning strikes prevention tips:

1. Stay away from isolated trees, telephone booths, towers, poles and billboards.
2. Immediately stop outdoor swimming, boating, fishing and other water activities.
3. Avoid using phone outdoors.
4. Avoid staying in open field.
