UTAR Cosplay Event: Breathing Life Into Your Favourite Characters

Kampar – Around 500 Otaku (a Japanese term used to
refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly to anime and
manga)
completely immersed themselves in the world of Cosplay at UTAR Heritage Hall on
June 20th.
This much-awaited annual event,
which was organized by the UTAR Japanese Culture Club comprised of a variety of
performances, such as singing, dancing, band performance and also sketch. The event
began with the Luka Luka Night Fever Dance by 8 dancers. Next in line was a singing
performance by Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid character. The three songs “inochi no namae”
from Spirited Away, “Cantarella” from Vocaloids and “Overfly” from Sword Art
Online received rowdy applause from the audience when it ended.
Yong
Yee Mun who dressed up as Miku was one of the spotlights of the Cosplay event.

The Verano Attack Band performance electrified
the audience with their powerful and charismatic stage presence. Besides, the
dramatic and humorous plots of Ranma, Kingdom Heart and Naruto sketches got the
audiences roaring with laughter.

Lastly, the catwalk performances of
eight One Piece characters brought the event to a climax marked the
unforgettable end of UTAR Cosplay Event 2013.

However, the most interesting part
of the event was yet to come. The audiences were able to take photos and
interact with their favourite characters from video games, anime, TV shows or
comic books which were brought to life at the event.
Gabriel Chia, the vice chairman of the
UTAR Japanese Culture Club stated that the Cosplay event was created with the love
of enjoying Cosplay and Japanese animation in mind. It acted as a platform for
those who are interested in Cosplay to exchange experience and spread the
Japanese pop culture. “Other than the Miku cosplayer, the rest of the
performers and cosplayers are UTARians. What deserves to be mentioned is that
some of their costume and equipments were entirely made by themselves,” said Chia.
Besides
Japanese animated characters, Chan Boon Pun (left) and Jason Choi (right)
dressed up as Iron Man. The costumes were constructed out of paper boards with
their own hands.
