Kampar, 26 Mar (J-on) - An about 360 UTAR students with staff members of the university gathered for the First Earth Hour event organized by Community Service Society (CSS) in collaboration with Majlis Daerah Kampar was held at UTAR Sport Complex from 8.00pm-10.00pm yesterday.
Earth Hour is a global energy awareness campaign initiated four years ago in Sydney, Australia, to encourage people across the world to raise awareness on the importance of saving electricity and other electrical appliances by turn off their lights for one hour.
As for this year, the Earth hour event officially and nationally falls on Saturday 26th March however the CSS students voluntarily organized this event one day earlier on Friday 25th March contrary of the official date in purpose to alarm everyone of creating the awareness of reducing the surplus usage of electricity and save the mother earth.
“Our purpose to make one day earlier is because to pre-inform everyone about the objective of this event and what should be perform tomorrow for 60 minutes” said Chin Hui Xin vice chairman of the program.
Students were really eager to welcome the Earth Hour to promote energy saving and to fight against climate change and global warming.
Within that one hour process, there was another performance of popping dance which the crowd of the floor started to support by clapping and screaming the extraordinary dance. The Community Service students also perform a group dance to support the program.The Earth hour event is started at 8.00pm with video presentation and welcoming speech by the Chairman Chai Wai Kit regarding about the awareness of Earth Hour event.
“Please buzz the message to your surrounding people such as friends, family member’s and housemate as well to switch off the light tomorrow at 8.30pm to 9.30 pm” said Chai Wai Kit, Chairman of the program.
The event was exciting by the 1/3 band song performance. At 8.25 pm the count down start for the light off ceremony with the stimulating drum band shows by the Kampar Chinese Independent High School. After the count down, the candle been light up and the electricity were completely switch off for one hour to support the Earth hour.

“This was a good event, I guess we should invite more student to participate in this celebration” said Aoran Asir student From UTAR Setapak.
“Good event but I hope we can do it in a different way for the next Earth Hour such as celebrate the Earth Hour at orphanages or some other place,” said Nagin, participant of the event.
Besides that, all the participants were directed by the PR committee’s to light up the candle and arranged in a position to shape the number ‘60” as a symbol of the Earth hour and there was a moment where all the participants were required to be in silent for one minute to perform a prayer to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims.

“This is a creative event and I am very happy and grateful because everyone did the prayer to the Japanese victim, Thank you,” said Ayako Izawa from the (JICA) Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
“This event is very meaningful and successful although it is the first celebration. I hope everyone can reduce the usage of electricity to save the mother earth,” said Yip Kim Yun.
The Earth hour event were successfully come to an end with flying up the lantern of the world with wishes which is tied up with a string by not releasing the lantern due to convention where the lantern are prohibited to release on the air.
